The first class commences at 3pm on Saturday 17th August. Arrive early and take advantage of this extra class.

Classes with the Guest Instructors, BAF Shidoin and overseas Shidoin continue each day from Sunday 18th to Friday 23rd August, starting with special sword classes at 6.30am taken by a BAF Shidoin. Regular Aikido classes begin daily at 9.00am in the morning and after a break for lunch, at 2.00pm in the afternoon and run until 5.30pm.

The Saturday class is included at no extra cost for those attending Summer School, for those wishing to attend for Saturday only, there will be a £10 charge.

Gala Dinner

We will be hosting a celebratory dinner on campus on the Friday evening. With the guest of honour being our visiting overseas instructor.

This is a 3 course meal plus coffee and is open to anyone wishing to attend and will cost £20 per person.  This fee also includes a complimentary drink (wine or soft drink) to celebrate the occasion. As numbers need to be confirmed early, we ask that applications and menu options be submitted on arrival at Summer School. Places will be limited so please book early.

Social Events

Social events during the week will include bar extensions, entertainment, and farewell Disco and Prize Draw on the Friday night. 1st prize is a free Summer School in 2020! 

By special arrangement with the University, children under 18 are allowed in a supervised section of the bar until 8pm.

Coach Course*

Subject to demand (minimum of ten attendees required) we will be running a CL1 (Coach Level 1) Aikido Coach Course on Wednesday 21st.  This is now the Assistant Coach Course and is open to candidates of 1st kyu and above.

This will be conducted by a qualified tutor. The course timetable will include both a theory and a practical session.  Candidates successfully completing the course will be awarded with appropriate certification.

The fee for this course will be £50 per person and is in addition to any other Summer School fees.

It is required that anyone wishing to attend should register their place with Stephen Parr as soon as possible via the Booking Form or the contact details on this site or with Jim Anderson directly. There are a couple of written tasks that need to be completed by candidates prior to the course so it is imperative that you register your details.

Places on this course are limited to a maximum of 20 and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.  If for whatever reason you wish to cancel your place on this course, please let us know so that the position can be reallocated. 

* This course will only be held if we are notified in advance that there will be sufficient attendees. If you wish to take part, please let us know as soon as possible.

University Facilities

During your stay you will have full use of the following onsite University facilities:

  • on-site restaurants for lunch (not Sunday)


For parents of young children there is a free unsupervised crèche area available on site during practice times with an extensive selection of games, toys and DVDs (opening times subject to confirmation).


A regular feature of Summer School is a "bring and buy" shop in which a range of Aikido related goods can be purchased, including a range of gi, books, videos, weapons and not forgetting the official Summer School T shirt. If you have suitable goods that you wish to sell in the shop, please let us know beforehand or at Registration.
